A live action Disney Musical about the Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City? Sound like a hit to me, but when Newsies came out in 1992 is was a commercial failure. Of course this was way before the success of High School Musical and all the other movie musicals that have come out in recent years. The movie is widely claimed to have gained a cult following after its initial failure at the box office. Who could forget that the lead is Academy Award winner, Christian Bale. WOW! Batman can sing, well sort of! The movie has grown over the years and finally was released on DVD in 2002. A stage musical based on the film is currently playing at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. It premiered on September 25, 2011 and ran for one month. I guess it is time that we all start to "Carry the Banner."
